Toyota declared in 2015 a return to the WRC in 2017, by racing the Yaris compact car. The 2017 season marked the 45th anniversary of the FIA World Rally Championship, kicking off once again with the classic Rallye Monte Carlo. However, Toyota did win the manufacturer's title in 1999. When in 1997 the WRCar rules were introduced, Ove Andersson at long last got the chance to turn his attention back to his preferred Corolla model. The series currently consists of 14 three-day events driven on surfaces ranging from gravel and tarmac to snow and ice. The ST165 Celica GT-FOUR was not only Toyota’s first all-wheel drive competition rally car but also the first Toyota capable of competing at the highest level of the World Rally Championship (WRC). The honors then came to an end when Toyota decided to temporarily withdraw from the WRC so as to compete in Formula 1. With introduction of the GT-4 and sales of between 2500-5000 production versions worldwide a year Toyota was eligible to race in WRC. This win at the 1984 World Rally Championship Safari Rally of Kenya would be the first of a hat trick of wins for Toyota and their Twin-Cam Turbo Celica.

Toyota was disqualified from that year’s WRC and banned from taking part in WRC rallies the following year.
