UT 12 approaches Bryce Canyon National Park from the west via Red Canyon, a relatively shallow valley in the side of the Paunsaugunt Plateau surrounded by much exposed, orange red limestone (the Claron Formation). It is surrounded by Pink Claron Limestone formations similar to those found in Bryce Canyon National Park. At a 7,400 foot elevation, this area is perfect for mountain biking, hiking, and cross country skiing. The area around the campground has an extensive trail system for hiking, mountain biking and roadbike riding. Off-highway vehicle (OHV) use is allowed on the Casto Canyon Trail. Red Canyon is just adjacent to Highway 12, which many people use en route to Bryce Canyon. The Red Canyon Campground is situated amid ponderosa pine in Red Canyon along Scenic Byway Utah State Highway 12. Red Canyon Bicycle Trail is a 38.8 kilometer out and back trail located near Panguitch, Utah that offers scenic views and is good for all skill levels. Bryce Canyon National Park itself drops away from a flat, sagebrush-filled plateau. Your cowboy guide will share some extraordinary history of the Bryce Canyon area during your adventure such as how the famous outlaw Butch Cassidy himself once roamed these parts.

The trail is primarily used for nature trips and road biking. The Birdseye Trail is a moderate .8-mile hike offering spectacular close-up views of the red rock formations. I have shown them as one longer hike that explores the entire area, but you can break it up anyway that you want. Please check with the visitor center for trail use.

Even from the middle of individual trails, there are trails of use that will take you back to the Visitor Center or the road.
